Dr. Vic’s Memorial Service and Celebration of Life
Tribute by Kurt R. Schaarschmidt, D.C. – August 13, 2009

I've known Dr. Vic for 45 years, and he is the single most important mentor in the shaping of my successful life.

At age 14, I became his chiropractic patient. After Dr. Vic helped my father with migraine headaches, and my mom with chronic knee pain, my dad asked him if chiropractic could help eczema, which I had all of my childhood. After taking a series of adjustments, chiropractic also helped my eczema.

Dr. Vic believed that chiropractic could help a multitude of non-spinal conditions with a chiropractic adjustment, and it worked for me and for countless other patients as well. You see, Dr. Vic was much much more than just a doctor, he was truly a healer.

I stayed as a maintenance patient, and then my father died suddenly, at the age of 59, of a heart attack. I was 21 at the time, and I needed some answers. Having been his patient for seven years, I knew Dr. Vic had something I wanted, I just did not yet know what it was.

One day, while in for an adjustment, I asked Dr. Vic about my father's sudden passing, and he said I needed to come to one of his lectures. I went, and this was the start of a lifelong quest for knowledge. That evening, he and his wife, Gwen, gave an information lecture on a philosophy of life called Concept-Therapy, which taught about healing the whole person, body, mind and spirit.

Shortly, thereafter, I took the course. It was the most wonderful correlation of science, combined with the wisdom of the ages, and I am still studying it.

One thing you have to say about Dr. Vic was that he was a promoter. He believed in Concept-Therapy and Chiropractic wholeheartedly and he wasn't afraid to tell anyone that you need this knowledge. Not only did he live Concept-Therapy, but by his words and example, he could disseminate and sell his ideas and concepts to lots of other people, as well.

Talk about a promoter, to the best of my knowledge, he sent over 50 young men and women to chiropractic college. That's almost unheard of. I was one of these 50, and I never looked back. During school and afterwards, he was always there to help us understand more about life and practicing chiropractic.

He could also really promote Concept-Therapy. He and Gwen had large classes, brought many new students to the Concept-Therapy movement, and he and Gwen, and later Drs. Jack and Jackie Masche, traveled all over North America teaching these seminars. Yes, he was a promoter, and he could promote what was important to him, like only a handful of others could.

Dr. Butch and I were roommates at Palmer College of Chiropractic, and we came home on certain weekends and would talk with Vic and Gwen. They had the most wonderful marriage, relationship, and workable philosophy of life. Being young and single, I asked why get married? Vic and Gwen's answer simply was that two people, with a great rapport, who are on the same page, could go farther together than the sum total of how far each of the two individuals could go by themselves, and didn't Vic and Gwen demonstrate that well!

Vic was passionate about Concept-Therapy, chiropractic, and his family. He worked hard and he played hard, and said he was always happy. When you asked him how he was doing, he always said one thing TERRIFIC! And he meant it, and didn't just spit it out. One thing that he always taught in his classes was that you can't be healthy if you're not happy. He lived to be 88, so he must have been happy for a long time! Another thing he always taught was that life is always getting better, and when trials and tribulations come along, as they always will, it's always for the individual's growth. If you have trouble accepting this concept, you need to go over by "Dr." Gwennie and sign up for the next Concept-Therapy class.

As I said, he loved life and lived it well. He practiced chiropractic for 67 years, and never once had to get up in the morning to go to work, because of his love for chiropractic, Concept-Therapy, his family, and life. He just loved to get up and serve life in his own way every day. The following quote sums this up beautifully, and this applies equally as well to Gwen, his soul mate and twin, but since this is Vic's celebration of life, I will insert his name where appropriate.

This is called Master of the Art of Living.

Dr. Vic made little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his education and his recreation. He hardly knew which was which. He simply pursued his vision of excellence at whatever it was he was doing, leaving others to decide whether he was working or playing. To Vic, he was always doing both. Isn't that a great way to live? It sure beats just living for "Miller Time."

It's not easy at a time like this to say goodbye to such a wonderful person, such a dear friend, great teacher and mentor, and terrific doctor, healer, and colleague, but we don't have to. In German, we don't say goodbye, instead we say auf wiedersehen, which means till we meet again. We all know that life is eternal, and that we will all be together again with Dr. Vic, so at this time, I would like to end my tribute to Dr. Vic in the same way he always ended a Concept-Therapy class; by saying Adios Amigo, till we meet again, and may God richly bless you, and all of us.

Dr Victor L. Loofboro, better known to so many as simply: Dr Vic.

How does one put into words the impact that this one person, along with his devoted companion, help-mate, and wife, Gwen, has had on the consciousness of so many? I don’t think it is possible to write or talk about Dr Vic without including Gwen. She was always by his side helping, assisting, talking with the students, and teaching. Gwen was without doubt, the other half of Dr Vic.

So, I make my feeble attempt. My first introduction to Dr Vic Loofboro was at the 1964 Convention in Kansas City, Mo. I can't say that I met him personally, but I was introduced to him through his convention talks. It was later on that I met him in his Psychiatric Principles class and we all know the impact Dr Vic's teaching could have on your consciousness. Yes, he "stirred the pot", so to speak, and he made you think. He never gave you answers, but he did give a pretty good direction to take so that you could find your own answers. We may not have liked what he was saying, or the direction to go to get the answers, but those that followed his suggestions, found the answers needed at the time.

Through the years, Dr Vic and his family became dear friends. They were always most accommodating when Dr Rudy and I traveled to Milwaukee to teach Suggestive Therapy. In fact, it was in Milwaukee that Dr Rudy became ill and could not teach the class. Dr Vic, Gwen, Dr Butch, Dr Jackie, all pitched in and we taught a very fine Suggestive Therapy class. I will never forget that experience. I did not know it at the time, but I was in training for the future and it was a great learning opportunity. Dr Vic always included in any image, "to be at the right place at the right time and to be able to know it." Well, I can't say that I "knew it" at the time, later on though, I KNEW that I had, indeed, been at the perfect place to receive the help I needed. I have often reflected on how this Power does put us in the "right" place for whatever we need. It is up us to KNOW that we are in the right place.

Later on, after Rudy made his transition, I continued to teach and the Loofboro Team greeted and assisted the Barbara Lynn team with the same caring support and enthusiasm as they did the Lynn Team. I think we all know that there wasn't anything personal about their way, as their way was and is to assist Life in any way possible.

A Life-time Beamer has many connotations. It means one that takes classes for their life-time, after the first class. It means that one remains a member in good standing with the Concept-Therapy Institute for their life-time. It also means that the member does the above and includes assisting Life at every opportunity and in what ever way is needed. I think this describes Dr Vic. At least it describes my experience with Dr Vic.

I thank you, Dr Vic and I thank your family for the generosity and love shown throughout the years.

Barbara Lynn
