"A FOCUS ON HOCUS POCUS"
By Sue Linda Wright

Hocus pocus,
Ala kazam,
Now you see it,
And now it's gone, scram!

To focus means that we pay attention to something. When we focus our eyes, or binoculars, a telescope or a microscope, we see the world around us. But there is another way to focus. When we focus our mind, we can see a world that comes from inside of us. The world inside us can be wondrous, magical, beautiful, exciting, friendly, warm, loving and truly a star-filled Heaven. Or it can be cold, scary, dark, stormy, prickly, cloudy, worrisome, yucky and truly a place we don't want to be.

Hocus pocus,
Ala kazam,
Is your world a Heaven?
Or a bad and sad jam?

In a Youth Concept-Therapy Class and Day Camp such as the one being held at the Concept-Therapy Institute campus July 11 - 16, 2006, we learn how the Spirit of God uses certain laws to create this wonderful Universe with everything in it. We learn all about the Spirit creating each one of us! We find that the Spirit wants us to be creators, too. It gives us its laws as tools so that we can learn to be super creators! We can use those laws to create the kind of Life we would like to live. Spirit gave people the ability to choose what their life is like. And the Spirit gives us whatever we choose to create. What we create depends on:

  1. What ideas we focus on and
  2. How strong and powerful our focus is.

Hocus pocus,
Ala kazam,
Choose what you focus,
Aim strong, wham and bam!

It is important to learn how to focus our mind, or concentrate, or pay attention. We bring into our life those things we pay the most attention to. Fascination causes us to focus our attention. Fascination is being "fastened to an idea" whether we want to be or not. It is like being so spellbound that we can't think! It is important to think about choices and not to let our mind trick us! After all, things aren't always the way they seem!

Hocus pocus,
ala kazam!
Things seem to be,
but maybe not, Sam!

Some people only pay attention to what they feel at the time or what happens to them. Others worry about their future. They do not know that they can change what they feel and have happen in their life. They can use Spirit's Laws and focus on what they want, rather than on what they don't want. We can "see" or focus on an idea or we can make it go scram!

The Spirit will bring us what we focus on. We can all choose to focus on:

  1. Some thing we want to have,
  2. What we want to be,
  3. What we want to do.
  4. Some goal we want to reach.
  5. And what we want to feel!

Hocus pocus,
Ala kazam,
Change your life,
And know that you can!

Have you ever wanted something a lot, but had creepy, fearful, worrisome thoughts and feelings that you would not get what you wanted? Those thoughts and feelings keep people from focusing on what they want. But, there are ways to chase those awful thoughts and feelings away so that you can concentrate.

  1. Think. Find out what you are feeling. Is it fear, worry, jealousy or other feelings?
  2. Study the book, Am I All of That? (the youth version of the adult book, Rays of the Dawn). It will help you know which feeling you are having and how to change it.
  3. Ask for help from a trusted adult if need be.

Focus your thoughts on what you want, rather than on what you don't want. The exercise below will help you concentrate the mind.

Find a stop watch or a clock with a second hand. Pick a topic to think about. Start thinking. Time your self. Many people can think about one thing for 2 seconds only, before another thought comes flitting in! Each day, practice focusing on one idea a little longer. Make a goal of focusing on one idea for 33 1/3 seconds, which is the time it takes to give your idea power. The longer you focus, the more power you give that idea. Greater power makes it easier to reach your goal.

Remember, the Spirit brings us what we focus on. If a problem gets in the way of the goal, then do not just focus on the problem. Focus on solving the problem. Keep your mind on the solution and reaching the goal!

We can focus on a goal and ask the Spirit to help us find what we need. Then, we get into motion, have faith in the Spirit and soon, it guides us to our goal!
